Dancing with the Virtual Dervish: Virtual Bodies Diane Gromala and Yacov Sharir Grant awarded to conduct primary research in artistic applications of virtual reality. This project was one of six selected from among an international pool of collaborative groups which includes the foremost media artists and computer scientists working with virtual and communications technologies. It resulted in numerous exhibitions, lectures, and publications, and aired on the Discovery Channel and the BBC. For two years, beginning October 1994.

Historical precedents of interface design: the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili University of Washington’s Royalty Research Fund Grant to conduct research on the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, a 500-year old Renaissance book which is argued to have presaged postmodern forms of writing, book design, and filmic conventions.
